Anesthesia and Biopsies

The type of anesthesia used depends upon the type of biopsy and the amount of tissue removed. A local anesthesia that numbs the skin is used for needle biopsies.

For surgical biopsies, the surgeon may use a local anesthetic as well as some intravenous medicines to make the patient drowsy. Most breast biopsies do not require the use of a general anesthetic.
